Robert Gates DOD

Another Iran-Contra Retread...     
Just to mention in passing...   A major list of Democrats voted against him because of less than stellar answers about his envolement in the Iran-Contra scandal during the reign of Ronny RayGun.


Many of his fellow politicians have been resurected in the Bush Administration.   Most famously John Negraponte at Homeland Security.


His answers today at his confirmation hearing were actually rather forthright and realistic in part.   At least he realises we are not winning and that we must start getting the targets off the back of our troops by getting them out of there.   - fc

At Hearing, Gates Says U.S. Not Winning War in Iraq


WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 - President Bush's nominee to be defense secretary said today that the United States was not winning the war in Iraq, and that an American failure there could help to ignite "a regional conflagration" in the Middle East.



Mr. Gates said "there clearly were insufficient troops in Iraq after the initial invasion." While he said that he envisions "a dramatically smaller" number of United States troops there, he said an American presence would be required "for a long time."



The nominee's vision of a self-sustaining, self-defending, self-governing Iraq, and his assessment that American strength there can and should be drastically reduced, emerged as crucial debating points before the panel.
