Congress' War Powers

Republican Hypocrites

ƒc Glenn Greenwald provides evidence that the Repubs had plenty of authority to stop Clinton in Somalia and force the withdrawal of troops.   They ammended the AUMF (Authorization to Use Military Force) to set a timetable to force that withdrawal.   Must have slipped McCain's mind along with several other powerful Repubs that did not mince words about their power to stop Clinton.   How easily they forget when it is their War Criminal Hero in the White House...

Unclaimed Territory

Republicans and Congress' war powers -- then and now

Back in September, when Chris Wallace falsely accused Bill Clinton of emboldening the Terrorists by prematurely cutting-and-running from Somalia (a favorite right-wing meme), it was documented here (as Clinton himself pointed out to Wallace) that it was actually Republican Senators who forced Clinton to withdraw troops by imposing troop withdrawal deadlines on him and threatening further restrictions on his ability to keep troops there. But if one goes back and reviews that debate, it is quite striking that Republicans back then certainly did not seem to believe that Congress lacked the ability to restrict the President's power to deploy troops. They argued exactly the opposite - that they had that power -- and they used it to force Clinton out of Somalia (all excerpts are available here, by searching "Somalia):

Sen. John McCain - October 19,1993

Dates certain, Mr. President, are not the criteria here. What is the criteria and what should be the criteria is our immediate, orderly withdrawal from Somalia. And if we do not do that and other Americans die, other Americans are wounded, other Americans are captured because we stay too long--longer than necessary--then I would say that the responsibilities for that lie with the Congress of the United States who did not exercise their authority under the Constitution of the United States and mandate that they be brought home quickly and safely as possible. . . .

Iran Rising

Thank You... Mr. Bush...

ƒc The very thing the NeoCons went to war for has backfired in their face.   They invaded Iraq to have strategic control of the Middle East and an easy time of invading Iran.

Their objective :: Reduce Iran's influence over the extremists throughout the M.E.   The outcome of their folly :: Iran has been given immensely more power than they had before.   All it has cost them is the supply of guns, ammo and IED's to the radicals, something they were already doing.   They just upped the ante a little more since Bush created the perfect environs for the breeding grounds for terrorism in Bush's Islamic Republic of Iraq.

With Iran Ascendant, U.S. Is Seen at Fault

Arab Allies in Region Feeling Pressure

"The United States is the first to be blamed for the rise of Iranian influence in the Middle East," said Khaled al-Dakhil, a Saudi writer and academic. "There is one thing important about the ascendance of Iran here. It does not reflect a real change in Iranian capabilities, economic or political. It's more a reflection of the failures on the part of the U.S. and its Arab allies in the region."

"Iran's supporters are widespread -- they're in Iraq, they're in Afghanistan, they're everywhere. And you know, the American soldiers in the Middle East are hostages of Iran, in the situation where a war is imposed on it. They're literally in the hands of the Iranians," said Najaf Ali Mirzai, a former Iranian diplomat in Beirut who heads the Civilization Center for Iranian-Arab Studies. "The Iranians can target them wherever, and Patriot missiles aren't going to defend them and neither is anything else."

"Iran would suffer," he added, "but America would suffer more."

Bank Of Iran :: Bagdad Division

Dollars for Euros...?

ƒc I'm sure this is exactly what Bush and the NeoCons had in mind when they cooked up the scheme to attack Iraq.   Actually in their world, Iraq was supposed to be a U.S. friendly staging point to control the Middle East.   As it turns out by creating The Islamic Republic Of Iraq, Bush endowed them with their own sovereigninity, which is a slap in the face to everything he had hoped for.

Sovreigninity is hard work but they look like they are quite capable of playing out the cards that Bush has dealt them.   Too bad he was such a blind fool in not taking seriously the warnings that this might happen, along with the other miriad of things that have since transpired.   Such a stupid man...

Iranian reveals plan to expand role in Iraq

BAGHDAD: Iran's ambassador to Baghdad outlined an ambitious plan on Sunday to greatly expand its economic and military ties with Iraq - including an Iranian national bank branch in the heart of the capital

The ambassador, Hassan Kazemi Qumi, said Iran was prepared to offer Iraqi forces training, equipment and advisers for what he called "the security fight." In the economic area, Qumi said, Iran was ready to assume major responsibility for the reconstruction of Iraq, an area of notable failure on the part of the United States since American-led forces overthrew Saddam Hussein in the invasion nearly four years ago.

Faux News

To Air 'Path To 9-11' Deleted ScenesFaux News

ƒc Faux News must be getting desperate to stir the faithful wingnuts.   With all the Republicans turning (flopping) on Bushji and even some of the NeoCons spewing bile as to what Bush didn't do enough of when he had the chance, times must be getting hard...   Real Hard...   roflmao...

Fox News to air deleted, false scenes from ABC's The Path to 9/11

According to a January 26 Los Angeles Times article, Fox News will rebroadcast "footage from ABC's controversial miniseries 'The Path to 9/11' that was edited out of the docudrama amid criticism that it inaccurately portrayed the Clinton administration's response to the terrorism threat."

As Media Matters for America documented, The Path to 9/11, the two-part miniseries that aired on ABC on September 10-11, 2006, contained inaccurate scenes that maligned the Clinton administration's counterterrorism efforts and bolstered the Bush administration's. The Path to 9/11 drew sharp criticism from former Clinton administration officials, journalists, and conservatives who noted that significant parts of the "docudrama's" content were not supported by the 9-11 Commission's findings, despite the claims of ABC and writer Cyrus Nowrasteh that the film was largely based on the commission's report.

Anti War Protest ...jan 27 2007

Groups Head to Capital to Step Up Antiwar Drive

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 — Tens of thousands of demonstrators are set to arrive in the capital this weekend for a major antiwar march, staging the first of several protests intended to persuade the new Democratic-controlled Congress to do more than simply speak against President Bush’s Iraq policy.

Americans Against Escalation in Iraq (Google Search), a coalition of labor unions, MoveOn.org and other groups that have traditionally rallied against wars, has raised $1.5 million since it was formed two weeks ago. The group is singling out Republicans and Democrats who have spoken out against the war, but who have so far declined to pledge support for a resolution denouncing Mr. Bush’s plan to increase the number of troops.
