Chernobyl MeltDownFrom a post at Digby about Iran and the taboo of Nuclear War comes the info below about Chernobyl.   In 1986 the Nuclear Power Plant underwent a meltdown of the core of the reactor causing the worst contamination since Hiroshima.



Three Mile Island was the most serious Nuclear Accident in American History, which proved we were not advanced enough and safety oriented as we should have been. Even as Kvatch in the comments points out the damage was contained at Three Mile Island compared to a total catastrophic failure that occurred at Chernobyl.

With rethoric circulating wildly about using the bomb, it is time we look at the past and weigh the consequences of such actions.   Humanity deserves more than to turn to technological barbarism.   - fc (edited content 4-28-06)

This is an interesting web site run by a Ukrainian woman who is fond of riding through the Chernobyl restricted zone on her motocycle taking photos, with a geiger counter in one hand and a camera in the other. Her father is a physicist and gets her passes to get through the checkpoints. I found it fascinating.

The day after the accident, this place on the bridge provided a good view of the gaping crack in the nuclear containment vessel that was ruptured by the explosion. Many curious people came here to have a look and were bathed in a flood of deadly x-rays emanating directly from the glowing nuclearcore.
